Optical fiber is everywhere and is absolutely not limited to telecommunications, but plays a crucial and growing role in biomedical applications, laser industry and sensing. Many optical fiber systems are bought by non-expert of photonics and most of problem with optical fibre cables can be solve with simple safety rules and cheap materials. However, every photonic system including optical fiber (optical spectrum analyser, optical fiber laser, fiber sensor) are susceptible to outages, either by damage to the cable plant or problems with the communications equipment. This training covers the common types of damage that occur on a fiber optic cable, how to plan for outages and restoration, and how to troubleshoot and repair problems. This 3-day industry training course provides engineers with the basic technical insights and skills in optical fiber technology and fiber metrology. The course covers the key aspects of optical fiber conception and highlights the advantages for sensing. Optical fiber technology are illustrated with demonstrations, and hands-on experience is provided with state-of-the-art distributed fiber equipment. Day 1 will be dedicated to basics of optical fiber (cleaning, splicing) Day 2 will be focused on troubleshoot and repair problems. Day 3 will be dedicated to distributed fiber sensing applications.
