Optical fibers technology and application to sensing in biomedical, civil and transportation engineering

2026 29 April

Optical fiber is everywhere and is absolutely not limited to telecommunications, but plays a crucial and growing role in biomedical applications, laser industry and sensing. Many optical fiber systems are bought by non-expert of photonics and 80% of problem with optical fibre cables can be solve with simple safety rules and cheap materials. However, every photonic system including optical fiber (optical spectrum analyser, optical fiber laser, fiber sensor) are susceptible to outages, either by damage to the cable plant or problems with the communications equipment. This online training, provided by CNRS-FEMTO-ST, covers the common types of damage that occur on a fiber optic cable, how to plan for outages and restoration, and how to troubleshoot and repair problems. Half of the training will be dedicated to an overview of optical fiber sensor application. This online training course is free-of-charge but requires attendees to register in advance.
