Dear Photonics21 members,
In our new Photonics21 newsletter edition, we like to inform you that due to the uncertain Coronavirus situation, the Photonics PPP Annual Meeting has been postponed to 2021. However, we like to invite you to join an online meeting "Photonics21 towards Horizon Europe" on Thursday, 5th November 2020 to update you about the latest developments within Photonics21 as well as the further development towards a European Partnership for Photonics under Horizon Europe.
In addition to this, we provide you latest information on the selected European photonics-related projects under the Coronavirus call.
Furthermore, we like to share with you an overview on the funded Photonics PPP pilot lines which offer a variety of services to industry as well as the Photonics PPP Hydroptics project story.
As always you will find some further photonics-related workshops.
If you like to inform the European photonics community on an interesting photonics news or event, please contact us via secretariat@photonics21.org .
Best regards and stay healthy

2 photonics-related projects selected under the Coronavirus call
|
2 photonics-related projects are among the 23 selected projects for funding under the European Commission Coronavirus call which will receive €128 million in EU funding.
The funding under Horizon 2020, the EU's research and innovation programme, is part of the Commission's €1.4 billion pledge to the Coronavirus Global Response initiative, launched by President Ursula von der Leyen in May 2020.
The photonics-related projects are CorDial-S and VASCOVID.
CorDial-S aims to develop a point-of-care testing device that is portable and easy-to-operate for fast COVID-19 diagnosis in nasopharyngeal and saliva samples at a low cost. The Consortium has already developed a portable, handheld Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR) biosensor with magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) that increases the sensitivity of the molecular receptor through multivalent binding
VASCOVID will further develop a biophotonics diagnostics platform to improve COVID-19 ICU patient stratification, thereby addressing a pressing specific medical need. It is based on an on-going collaboration that was initiated during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic. The concept is an evidence-based decision-making tool combining a multimodal bio-photonic solution and AI with protocols for intensive care management. The infrastructures for telemedicine will ensure a cost-effective, portable, fast, and easy-to-use platform, suitable for deployment in intensive care units.

Benefit of the services offered by the Photonics PPP pilot lines
|
Several European Pilot Lines, which help companies take photonics technologies from lab into market, have been launched by the Photonics Public Private Partnership (PPP). The Pilot Lines mean that companies will be able to take their good ideas, scale-them up and validate them with the first customers for commercial production.
This includes the thousands of high tech SMEs in Europe who often lack access to advanced, cost-intensive infrastructures and expertise needed to manufacture new and innovative products.
Find out more about the services on the Photonics21 website.

Photonics PPP project Hydroptics - Scientists use photonics to make wastewater eco-friendly
|
Wastewater will soon become cleaner and less harmful to plants and animals thanks to a new, ultra-sensitive water sensor being developed by European scientists to detect tiny amounts of toxic substances with light.
A new laser system to detect minute traces of toxic substances in wastewater is currently in development by a consortium of European scientists.
