The diversity of photonics and its applications in industry, medicine, the environment and many other areas poses a challenge in training young people for a career in photonics-related activities. As in other interdisciplinary fields, training in photonics requires knowledge from several fields, notably physics, materials science, computer science and engineering, and the successful application of photonics may also require a detailed understanding of fields such as engineering, biotechnology, nanotechnology, electronics or medicine.

One of the major challenges of Photonics21 is the education and training of young professionals in the field of photonics.
To advocate the interest on photonics, the platform invented in 2008 a Student Innovation Award. For the first time the prize was given this year to the Frenchman Yannick Chassagneux. His innovative R&D paper “THz quantum cascade lasers with ultimate control of mode pattern and divergence” fully met the expectations of the Photonics21 Student Innovation Award commitee.
