The Electrooptical Engineering (EOE) unit at BGU was established in the year 2000 to strengthen the research and education in electrooptics and photonics engineering at BGU. The unit offers graduate studies (M.Sc and PhD) in variety of fields in electrooptics and photonics such as image processing, biomedical optics, liquid crystal devices, optical imaging, atmospheric optics, optical computing, nanophotonics, remote sensing, photovoltaics, optical communications, atom optics and lasers. Presently we have around 140 M.Sc student and 25 PhD students. During the last 10 years over 400 M.Sc students and 30 PhD students graduated from the EOE unit. Over 50 publications are issued each year from the EOE department staff and students. The EOE academic staff composed of 4 core staff and over 20 staff members from other departments within the faculty of engineering sciences as well as from the Physics and Chemistry departments who participate both in the teaching and supervision of students. The image processing activity even involves researchers from other departments such as the geography and the department of industrial engineering.

We offer a Master degree program in Wireless, Photonics and Space Engineering. This is a 2-year program which gives the basics in all three areas, and in-depth studies in one of the chosen areas. The final half year of the program is devoted to a master thesis project, often in close collaboration with the research groups at the Photonics Laboratory. Some students can continue on the team, as graduate students working towards their PhD in Photonics after completion of the Master program.

The research-based MSc course "Print and Media Technology", taught in English, is a two-year, full-time Master's degree programme with focus on new printing and media technologies, like printed electronics, digital fabrication, smart media etc. Being a hybrid field of study, the course draws upon a wide range of disciplines. With input from both academia and industry, the programme's interdisciplinary curriculum is uniquely designed to be relevant in newly emerging and rapidly growing markets. Through team-based, industry- as well as research-oriented projects, students develop the professional skills required to become practitioners, managers or scientists in the printing and media industry, or to pursue PhD studies. With the possibility to study abroad for one semester and thereby receive two full Master's degrees, students are able to maintain a distinct competitive edge, opening doors to excellent career opportunities. The alternative to the double degree option is to study the whole Master's degree programme at Chemnitz University of Technology in Germany.

Optics and photonics research spans a huge range of disciplines ranging from communications, biomedical instruments and devices, nanolithography and information processing. A subset of currently-funded research areas are: optofluidics, high-power semiconductor lasers, mid-infrared sources, silicon nanophotonics, light forces at the nanoscale, chip-scale interconnects, sub-diffraction lithography, polymeric optical materials, unconventional imaging and sensing, femtosecond laser nanofabrication, photonic crystals, optical metamaterials, plasmonics, wavefront coded imaging, 3D microscopy, antenna-based solar cells, terahertz-wave detectors, new energy technologies, high-temperature optoelectronics, nanofabrication, optical computing, signal processing, FR photonics, GaAs devices, and fiber optics.

The faculties of engineering, physics and mathematics have decided in close cooperation with the Laser Zentrum Hannover to combine their research and teaching skills in a new master´s study course: Optical Technologies. The aim of this master´s degree is to create specialists and leaders for the optical industry in Germany. Conditions in Hanover for such a course are superb, since there is a highly developed culture of basic research centered around the faculty of physics and mathematics, excellent applied sciences at the engineering faculty and a direct link to industry via the LZH.
