Taiwan government support "green photonics"
With the increasing environmental consciousness worldwide, photonics industry has also aimed to be less harmful to our environment. Photonics products or technologies that are energy saving and pollution free has become a hot topic in the related field. Taiwan's government has certain policies to support photonc industry's dedication to a sustainable future, especially in the solar and LED industries.

Micromachines to Mimic Birds
Using lasers and a water tank, an engineer hopes to use secrets gleaned from the aerodynamically unconventional flights of hummingbirds and other tiny birds and insects to help design tiny self-propelled flying surveillance devices. The research could also have biomedical and energy applications.

MEMS Spatial Light Modulator Demonstrator
The Fraunhofer IPMS will show a SLM demonstrator at the Photonics West
2010 show in San Francisco. The demonstrator setup visualizes the
function of the SLM. A green LED generates a light beam, lenses and
mirrors guide the light onto the SLM, where it is modulated.

Slowed light breaks record
Kilometre-long pulses of light have been stored for over one second in a 0.1 mm cloud of ultracold atoms – before being revived and sent on their way. This latest demonstration of light storage using electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) is the first to break the second barrier using ultracold atoms and has the added bonus of preserving the quantum state of the incoming pulse.
