The next Photonics21 Work Group 4 has been scheduled on the 4 September from 10.00 - 16.00 in Brussels.

The workshop aims to further consolidate the work group 4 specific chapter for the Photonics Multiannual Strategic Roadmap.

The meeting will be an important milestone in the photonics roadmap process as the Photonics Multiannual Strategic Roadmap will define the direction for future photonics research and innovation funding and will serve the European Commission to further elaborate on the new Framework Programme Horizon 2020.

As the capacity of the meeting venue is limited the workshop participation will be on a first come first serve basis.

The European Laser Institute (ELI) has published a summer newsletter edition. The newsletter also provides an article on Photonics21 and the current photonics roadmap process. Further information relate to ELI activities, the Innovation Award Laser Technology and the LASER World of Photonics.

The European Commission has published a study on "Photonics Technologies and Markets for a Low Carbon Economy". The study assesses the potential Europe has in five green photonic technologies:

• Photovoltaics,
  
• Lighting and Displays,
  
• Communications,
  
• Sensors and instrumentation and
  
• Clean Manufacturing.

On 26 June 2012, the European Commission adopted a new communication on KETs entitled "A European strategy for Key Enabling Technologies - A bridge   to growth and jobs". The strategy aims to keep pace with the EU’s main international competitors, restore growth in Europe and create jobs in the KETs industries.

In the heart of Montreal, the global photonics community convened for Photonics North, the international conference on the application of photonic technology, and celebrated the official launch of the new Canadian Photonic Industry Consortium (CPIC). Following a merger of the Canadian Institute for Photonic Innovations (CIPI) and Canadian Photonic Consortium (CPC), CPIC combines the strengths of these organizations to further increase the competitiveness of Canada’s photonics industry. By connecting photonics companies to new knowledge, investment and end-customers, CPIC aims to accelerate the application and adoption of Canadian photonic technologies across all sectors of the global economy.

The latest Photonics & Organic Electronics Newsletter has now been published by the European Commission Photonics Unit. It provides you latest information on the ICT Work Programme 2013, the PPP information days, the selected photonics projects of ICT Call 8 as well as the photonics roadmap process towards Horizon 2020 and the Photonics21 Annual Meeting 2012.

As part of the European Economic Recovery Plan, the Commission launched in 2009 three Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), in close cooperation with industry, on "Factories of the Future", "Energy-efficient Buildings" and "European Green Cars Initiative" to provide EUR 3.2 billion of support for long-term "smart" research investment in the manufacturing, construction and automotive sectors.
In July 2012, The European Commission intends to launch the last round of Calls under the Seventh Framework Programme (FP7) with an expected budget of over EUR 440 million in the dedicated calls of the three recovery plan PPPs; the first research projects funded under these calls are expected to start in the spring of 2013.

In order to support the preparation of proposals, the Directorates General for Research and Innovation, Information Society and Media, Energy, and Mobility and Transport of the European Commission are holding Joint Information Days on 9 and 10 July 2012 in the Charlemagne building, rue de la Loi 170, Brussels.

The next Photonics21 Work Group 2 workshop will take place on the 12 June 2012 at TRUMPF in Ditzingen alongside the LASYS exhibition in Stuttgart, Germany. The workshop will start at 15:00.
