The Work Groups (WGs) of Photonics21 are the main centres of activities within the Technology Platform. They focus on application-oriented, cross-disciplinary issues or on specific tasks like the development of the respective research priorites and the update of the Strategic Research Agenda. The Work Group Chair is responsible for the workflow and the accomplishment of the tasks. He reports regularly to the Executive Board. There are at least two work group meetings per year.

Photonics21 comprises seven work groups. Four of them are application-oriented, three of them focus on cross-disciplinary issues:
"The major highways of communication and information flow are optical. The data rates of the Internet are scaling with advances in lasers, optical fibres and optical coding technologies."
More
"Light is the tool of the future. Although today Europe is in the leading position in the world market for photonics in industrial production, European companies need innovation to further defend their position and to adopt novel technologies to keep up with the world wide development."
More
"Photonics has demonstrated a long tradition in the fields of life science and health care.

Today, it represents an indispensable tool."

More
"The European lighting industry has established a strong position in the world lamp market ..."
"Display applications are already an economic heavyweight. Moving towards intelligent environments will push the display market to even higher levels."

More
Photonics plays a key role in the fields of biomedical, environement and chemistry, process and quality control, security and safety, transport, space and aeronautics and multimedia.
More
"The design and manufacture of components and systems underpin European and indeed worldwide photonics activity. Optical material and photonic components serve as the basis for systems building at different levels of complexity."
More
"Photonics is all-encompassing, representing the indispensable technological pacemaker in industrial society."
